Matthew 1:21

He shall save His people from their sins

When many speak of salvation, they think only of rescue from hell and entrance into heaven. That is indeed a precious part of redemption, but it is only a portion of what Christ accomplishes. The promise given concerning Jesus is not merely that He will shield His people from punishment, but that  He will save them from their sins.

Our Lord does redeem His people from the wrath to come. He removes the condemnation their guilt deserves. Yet His victory goes deeper and further. He delivers them from their greatest enemy—not circumstances, not suffering, but sin itself.

Where Christ truly saves, He dethrones sin. He casts Satan from his rule. A person cannot claim Christ as Savior while allowing sin to remain unquestioned ruler of the heart. Scripture declares that sin shall not have dominion over those who belong to Him (cf. Romans 6).

This does not mean sin disappears entirely in this life. It remains present, and there will be struggle or conflict between the old nature and the new life implanted by the Spirit. There will be warfare. Yet sin will no longer reign as sovereign. It may resist, but it will not rule.

Christ becomes Master of the heart. The power of sin is broken, its authority challenged, its dominion overthrown. It must be mortified. The Lion of Judah prevails; the dragon is cast down.

Christ does not save His people in their sins – leaving them unchanged. He saves them from their sins – liberating, cleansing, and transforming them for His glory.
